The truth is, the past is littered with strange, awkward, and downright silly events, simply because it was shaped by people, and people have always been wonderfully absurd. This collection of anecdotes is a tribute to that lighter side of history, proving that our ancestors weren’t so different from us after all.

These short stories and bizarre facts serve as a delightful reminder that even the most revered historical figures were human. They had odd habits, made clumsy mistakes, and sometimes found themselves in completely ridiculous situations. Learning about these moments does more than just provide a laugh; it closes the vast gap of time, making the past feel incredibly vivid and relatable. It’s one thing to read about a president signing a treaty, and another to learn about his bizarre fear of electric lights.

The word “anecdote” itself comes from the Greek for “unpublished items.” It originally referred to secret or private stories about historical figures that were often too scandalous or silly for the official public record. So, in a way, sharing these quirky tales continues a long and noble tradition of enjoying the unofficial, behind-the-scenes version of history—which is almost always more entertaining.

We invite you to enjoy this collection of historical oddities. These are the kinds of stories that stick with you, offering a fresh and funny perspective on the people and events that shaped our world.

If you learned something new and had a good laugh, be sure to share these silly moments from history with a friend.

British Sisters Ida And Louise Cook Rescued 29 Jews From The N**is By Sneaking Out Valuables In Plain Sight

Both girls were born in Sunderland, Louise in 1901, Ida in 1904. By 1934 both girls, now considered spinsters, were living together in London and working civil service jobs although Ida would soon be a successful romance author under the pen name Mary Burchell (her first book was published in 1936). Ida and Louise both had a passion for opera and frequently traveled so they could see their favorite operas. That year Ida and Louise were both in Salzburg attending an opera festival. They became acquainted with a Romanian opera singer named Viorica Ursuleac and her Austrian husband, a conductor named Clemens Krauss who were both secretly involved in helping Jews escape from the N***s. The sisters were told about the plight of Jews in Austria and Germany and what they heard moved them so much that they knew they needed to act. Back in Britain the sisters contributed their own money and later donations from friends to help resettle Jews in Britain. Later they agreed to covertly transport expensive jewelry owned by Jews out of occupied territory. This was illegal as Jews weren’t allowed to take any valuable items out of the country so Ida and Louise took a big risk doing this. That’s when Ida had to transport the large diamond brooch and got the idea to pin it to the front of her cheap cardigan from Marks and Spencer’s. It worked so well that Ida and Louise repeated the ruse several more times. On the rare occasions when they were stopped by officials they would “do the nervous British spinster act” and act so crazy that any official would back off. As an example I’ll quote this anecdote from the article “When an Austrian frontier official questioned Louise’s opulent string of pearls that she was wearing along with her otherwise inexpensive outfit, she acted affronted, exclaiming, “And why not?!’ She frantically ran to a mirror and looked at herself, all the while yelling at the inspector, “What is wrong with my appearance? What were you trying to imply?” until the inspector fled Louise’s crazy act.” For their heroism they were awarded “Righteous Among the Nations” from Yad Vashem in 1965.

The Worst Year In Human History

If you ask what the worst year in human history is, there are a number of possible answers. Some might respond that 2020 was the worst year in human history, a time when life came to a literal halt. Nearly 6.9 million people died due to COVID-19. And if you’re a bit familiar with history, your answer might be that the worst year was 1918, the year World War I ended, after claiming the lives of around 20 million people. In addition, the Spanish flu swept the globe, k*****g between 50 to 100 million people. But did you know that there’s something even worse? A year that is described as the worst in recorded history… The Mysterious Fog: In the year 536 AD, the year began with a mysterious thick fog that covered vast parts of Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. It completely blocked out the sun. Procopius described the sun at that time: “It seemed as though the sun had lost its light, and it no longer shone with the brilliance of day, but rather as the moon, without rays or warmth, for more than a year.” The Roman statesman Cassiodorus also wrote: “The sunlight was weak, the sky appeared colorless, the cold pierced to the bone, and it was as if summer had been defeated by winter.” Catastrophic Climate Change: Temperatures dropped by 2 to 2.5 degrees Celsius in some regions, causing the worst cold spell the Northern Hemisphere had experienced in the past two thousand years. Widespread Famines: The climate shift led to the failure of harvests across Europe and Asia, resulting in massive famines, particularly in places like Ireland, Syria, and Byzantium. The Spread of Plagues: After this climate catastrophe and the ensuing famines, rats emerged from their hiding places in search of food, increasing their contact with humans. The fleas on these rats, which feed on blood, began infecting humans. Due to the general decline in public health and malnutrition, the world was struck by the Plague of Justinian, or the “Black Plague,” in the year 541 AD—just five years later. This pandemic k****d between 30 to 50 million people, nearly half of the population of the Byzantine Empire. The economy and military were weakened, trade came to a standstill, and this accelerated Europe’s descent into what became known as the Dark Ages. “The Triumph of Death is a painting by the Flemish artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder, created in 1562.”

Typical ending in many tales is ‘Bad criminal/animal was punished by local government official. {And men and women lived happily}/{Ghost with grudge never came because her grudge was vanished.}’….The Korean mode of storytelling began with either “Once upon a time back when tigers used to smoke,” “Once upon a time when tigers smoked pipes,” “A long, time ago when tigers were smoking,” or “Once upon a time when tigers were smoking.”

That intro to a story does sound odd to those of us who are used to “Once upon a time. “A long time ago, before the 17th century, tobacco was touted as a medicinal product in Korea, and smoking tobacco was something most could afford to do. Alas, in the 17th century, tobacco became a luxury item, and only aristocrats were allowed to smoke tobacco. Peasants used to watch the well-to-do enjoy their smoking of tobacco, and the peasants would lament, “We miss the days when even the tigers were smoking.” Back when tigers used to smoke,” would not be acceptable these days.

To give it a feeling of authenticity, Michael’s staff, family, and friends populated the grocery store. Some dressed up like the store’s staff, others like shoppers. Even the muzak was customized for his experience. Then, the King of Pop put on a single yellow latex glove and pushed his cart up and down the aisles. He played around a lot in the store and likened the experience to being at Disneyland, because as he says, “I got to do something I don’t normally get to do.” I’m not sure he got an authentic grocery shopping experience but it is fascinating, if not heartbreaking, to watch him try.

Inmates in federal prisons holding some of Brazil’s most notorious criminals are able to read up to 12 works of literature, philosophy, science or classics to trim a maximum 48 days off their sentence each year, the government announced. Prisoners will have up to four weeks to read each book and write an essay which must “make correct use of paragraphs, be free of corrections, use margins and legible joined-up writing,” said the notice published on Monday in the official gazette. A special panel will decide which inmates are eligible to participate in the program dubbed “Redemption through Reading”. “A person can leave prison more enlightened and with an enlarged vision of the world,” said a lawyer, who heads a book donation project for prisons.

The young owls resting on a tree branch don’t fall off, thanks to the strength of their back toe called the hallux. But younger owls struggle to do so and have to lie down while napping.

John McCue first became inspired to patch up some of the road hazards in Stellarton, Nova Scotia after he and his mother drove over a particularly nasty pothole. “There was one story a couple of weeks ago where a car was driving through and it nailed one of the biggest potholes here and it ripped the axle right off the car,” McCue told CBC. Rather than waiting for the city government to fix the pavement, McCue grabbed a snow shovel and started shifting gravel and road fill from the roadside ditches and moving it into the potholes. Now that passing traffic has packed the filling into the holes, McCue said that the road is significantly better than when he started. That being said, local police officers had warned McCue that if he did not stop his mission, then he would be charged.

The adaptation of several anatomical and biochemical mechanisms to establish an immune privileged microenvironment within the eye makes the eye immunologically unique. It is a tissue site where we may learn how immunity is regulated in inflammation and at rest. Certain sites of the mammalian body have immune privilege, meaning they are able to tolerate the introduction of antigens without eliciting an inflammatory immune response. Tissue grafts are normally recognised as foreign antigen by the body and attacked by the immune system. On such problem is autoimmune retinopathy, which is “usually manifested as a vascular problem” . This means that the immune system attacks and inflames the blood vessels in the back of the eye, on the retina, which can affect vision.

After running late to class, George Dantzig copied down two problems he thought were homework and solved them. Those two problems were in fact two famous unsolved problems of statistics, which later earned him his doctorate. One day In 1939, George Bernard Dantzig, a doctoral candidate at the University of California, Berkeley, arrived late for a graduate-level statistics class and found two problems written on the board. Not knowing they were examples of “unsolved” statistics problems, he mistook them for part of a homework assignment, jotted them down, and solved them. (The equations Dantzig tackled are more accurately described not as unsolvable problems, but rather as unproven statistical theorems for which he worked out proofs.) Six weeks later, Dantzig’s statistic professor notified him that he had prepared one of his two “homework” proofs for publication, and Dantzig was given co-author credit on another paper several years later when another mathematician independently worked out the same solution to the second problem.

In modern fairy tales, wolves are often depicted as cunning animals and described as evil animals. But they are not just the most loyal animal in the world but one of the most loyal animals to humans.  In fact, they have a family life that may be more than human relations. In general, a group of wolves will contain a male wolf, a female wolf, their children, and be repeated, which is very similar to the family in humans. This makes wolves loyal animals and one of the most faithful animals not just to their partner but to their group and family.

“Where the Wild Things Are” is a classic in the world of children’s picture books, with the titular “things” becoming beloved (if at times scary) storybook characters. But those characters weren’t originally going to be so-called “things.”  In another funny twist that Sendak acknowledged was somewhat rude, the things in the story were based on his relatives. While sitting shiva (a Jewish tradition of mourning), Sendak and his siblings saw many of their aunts, uncles and cousins, who inspired the monster-like characters.  “I remember our relatives used to come from the old country, those few who got in before the gate closed, all on my mother’s side. And how we detested them,” Sendak told Moyers. “The cruelty that children … you know, kids are hard. And these people didn’t speak English. And they were unkempt. Their teeth were horrifying … hair unraveling out of their noses. And they’d pick you up, hug you and kiss you [and say], ‘Aggghh. Oh, we could eat you up.’” Sendak included the phrase, “We’ll eat you up, we love you so,” in his book, which was first published in 1963 and inspired a movie version released in 2009, as a nod to his family, whom he learned to appreciate in his later years.  “And when I remember [my relatives], the discussion with my brother and sister, how we laughed about these people who we of course grew up to love very much, I decided to render them as the wild things, my aunts and my uncles and my cousins,” he said. “And that’s who they are.”

It is located in a park in front of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and was completed on July 1, 2013, coinciding with the 120th anniversary of the founding of the city. The monument commemorates the sacrifice of the mice in genetic research used to understand biological and physiological mechanisms for developing new drugs and curing of diseases. The monument, which sits on a granite pedestal, is of a laboratory mouse wearing pince-nez on the tip of its nose. The mouse holds knitting needles in its paws and is shown knitting a double helix of DNA. The bronze figure is itself only 70 cm (27½”) high, but the total height of the monument including the pedestal is 2.5 meters (98″). The DNA spiral emerging from the knitting needles winds to the left, thus showing that it is the still poorly understood Z-DNA – this symbolic of scientific research that is still to be done. In contrast, the more common B-DNA (depicted in school lessons) winds to the right.

Back in 2011, Roman Ostriakov, a homeless man from Ukraine living in Genova, was convicted for theft after he stole cheese and sausages amounting to €4 from a supermarket. A customer had seen Ostriakov put two pieces of cheese and a packet of sausages in his pocket and only pay for breadsticks at the cashier. He was subsequently sentenced to six months in jail and a €100 fine in 2015. The case went through three rulings in court before it was rejected in May 2016 in a historic ruling citing that the ‘right to survival prevails over property.’ It cited the importance of maintaining a shared humanity and that no one should be allowed to starve in a civilized society.

Ear Plugs

Pirate ships, well, the good ones, often had no less than 5 canons on board. Canons are loud in an open field, let alone in the belly of a large wooden ship. So, to avoid damage to the ears, pirates would often hang balls of wax from their earrings. Not only were these used as accessories, but the wax would also be plugged into their ears when canons were going off.

Earrings were special to them

While we hardly ever see a depiction of a pirate without golden earrings, it isn’t just because they thought they looked cool. Pirates were incredibly superstitious. Many of them believed that a golden earring would ensure that you never drowned. Others believed that they stopped sea sickness. However, the most common reason for wearing lavish earrings was so that if the wearer died, their gold could be melted down and used for a funeral. Many pirates would engrave their hometowns on their jewelry so that they could be buried at home.

Psycological warfare

This isn’t so much a tradition as much as it is a cool fact, but psychological warfare was huge for some pirates- namely Blackbeard. Edward Teach, otherwise known as Blackbeard, really enjoyed this aspect of a battle. He was famous for weaving hemp into his beard and hat and then lighting it on fire, so that smoke constantly bellowed from his head as he was fighting. Oh, and his ship was equipped with over 40 cannons.

Eye Patches

As a kid, I always assumed that a pirate wore a patch because he had lost an eye in battle. However, the truth is that they wore these patches so that one eye was always adjusted to the dark should they ever have to go beneath the deck. This was tested and proven on Mythbusters, and it’s pretty awesome.

Pirates loved booze

Okay, I think most of us figured that pirates loved to hit the bottle. But, did you know that pirates were also pretty decent mixologists? In the 1600s, the British Navy was given a ration of 5 shots of rum a day. When pirates got a hold of said rum, they would throw it into a barrel with beer, lemons, and sugar. The resulting mixture was a favourite among pirates. The lemon, in fact, was said to help prevent scurvy.

Keelhauling was savage

Torture and punishment is never fun (Well…) and it’s especially savage when pirates are doing it. Keelhauling involved tying a rope to someone and dragging them underneath a moving ship, which was covered in barnacles. The person being keelhauled would emerge from the ocean heavily cut up and nearly drowned. Terrifying.

There were many variations of the Jolly Roger

Not every pirate ship boasted a skull and crossbones, but most of them had some form of what is famously known as the ‘Jolly Roger.’ Blackbeard, for example, had a white skeleton devil thrusting a spear through a red heart. Some ships had red skeletons on their flags, some had pirates standing on skulls, hourglasses and skeletons, it was different depending on the crew. They were all pretty badass though.

Pirate’s didn’t bury their treasure

We can thank the entertainment industry for that common myth. Well, I guess it’s not technically a myth since ONE pirate actually DID bury his treasure. William Kidd buried some treasure off the coast of Long Island once, only to have a shipmate dig it up and use it as proof against his piracy to get him hanged. Anyway, most pirates didn’t bury their treasure because very rarely was the treasure actually gold and jewels. Most of the time, the booty came in the form of food, alcohol, linens, and lumber.

Fear the red flag

While all pirate flags were scary, there was one flag that pirates feared most- the red flag. A red flag flying on an approaching ship meant that they would show no mercy. Anyone and everyone on board will be killed if we get to you. The flag was known as ‘the bloody red’ and it often was enough for pirates say “nope” and jump ship.

Being marooned was a real thing

When a pirate screwed up bad enough, he would be marooned. What does that mean, exactly? Well, if they did something bad enough to be kicked off of the ship but not bad enough to be keelhauled, they would be left on an island with nothing but a pistol and some water. Some pirates would survive long enough to be found and rescued by other pirates, but it was a very rare occurrence.
