At just 54 light-years away, the newly discovered HD 7924 planetary system falls much closer to our own than many others discovered in the past. While there are a number of known planetary systems that are closer than HD 7924 (Alpha Centauri, at about 4.4 light years away, is the closest planetary system we’ve discovered), many more fall outside of this range. MACS0647-JD, for example, lies a ever-stretching 13.3 billion light-years from earth — just to give a bit of perspective. That’s a big difference.
