According to recent studies, snakes are the third most feared creature on the planet. People, big and little, despise these slithering animals.

So you can image how relieved the majority of the world must feel to realize that the titanoboa no longer exists…

This thing, known as the “Titanoboa” slithered its way around La Guajira in northeastern Colombia between 58 and 60,000,000 years ago. It was, as far as we know, the largest snake to have ever roamed the earth. Could you imagine what OTHER monsterous creatures were around at this time?!

Titanoboa grew to be up to 13 meters (42.7 feet) long and weighed upwards of 1,135 kg (1.25 tonnes ). The most complete fossils of Titanoboa were found in a coal mine in Colombia.

Although it wouldn’t eat all that often, when it did, it FEASTED. The diet of Titanoboa consisted of the crocodiles of the Ancient Cerrejon Formation of Columbia in South America. To confirm, this GIANT SNAKE would eat CROCODILES like candy.

This is the skeleton of an Anaconda. The Titanoboa was twice as long and 3 times as heavy as a fully grown “Giant Anaconda”.

Although they would have looked very much like modern-day anacondas, they most likely didn’t hunt like them. Rather than constricting and strangling their prey, they likely killed them by striking quick and fiercely at the neck. They did, however, still have the ability to crush the life out of anything they wanted.

This snake was able to grow so large because of the ideal conditions that their habitat presented them with. They were carnivores that ate only a few times a year. If they weren’t feeling like eating crocs, they likely also feasted on other snakes like cobras, pythons, and other constrictors.

They were incredibly skilled hunters and it is estimated that they were capable of crushing their prey with the force of 400 lbs per square inch.

Like anacondas, these beasts likely spent a lot of their time in the water. This only makes it even scarier. Imagine going back in time and finding yourself in the jungles of Colombia knowing that these things were slithering around both in the bush and beneath the murky depths of the swamps?!

This newly-designed Smart Forest city in Cancun, Mexico aims to be fully self-sustaining

The project highlights the importance of sustainability and aims to make the city fully self-sustaining. “Thanks to the contribution of the German office Transsolar, Smart Forest City – Cancun is conceived to be completely food and energy self-sufficient,” writes the studio. “Surrounded by a ring of solar panels and of agricultural fields irrigated by a water channel connected with a underwater maritime pipe, the City will be deeply characterized by full circular economy.”

Another key element in the project, according to the architects, is water. It would be gathered in a huge basin at the entrance of the City where a desalination tower would stand. The water would then be distributed to the residents by a system of canals. The city will also have a series of water gardens that will help fight floods.

“Thanks to the new public parks and private gardens, thanks to the green roofs and to the green facades, the areas actually occupied will be given back by nature through a perfect balance between the amount of green areas and building footprint,” said Stefano Boeri Architetti in an interview with Dezeen.

The studio claims that the Smart Forest City could possibly be “a pioneer for a new kind of human settlement”. “Big data management is used to improve the Governance of the city, hence, the life of its citizens,” says the studio. With the help of sensors, data about the city would be collected, analyzed and used to help the residents. “Energy flows are monitored, in order to suggest to the users certain energy measures. For example, running their washing machines or dish washers during peak generation conditions, in order to get a cheaper energy rate, while supporting the energy management of the mechanical systems,” explains Stefano Boeri Architetti.

Another thing that will be implemented in the city will be something called MIC, or Mobility in Chain. This means that residents and visitors will be able to leave their vehicles at the edges of the city and use internal electric transportation to get around.

The Smart Forest City aims to become a center of research and will include affordable housing for both students and professors. “The idea behind this project is to create a district dedicated to research and innovation (the fields will be: molecular biology, robotics, IT, etc) where academic institutions and research centres meet, along with big multinational corporations and the new generations of students and researchers, Mexican and from all over the world,” say the architects.

You have to agree that all of this sounds very ambitious – but Stefano Boeri has surprised us before. Let’s hope that we’ll be able to visit this utopian city in the near future!

Norway may very well have built the most astoundingly beautiful public toilet in the world. And, I’m pretty sure, in the Solar System as well. What looks like a painstakingly crafted art installation or part of some high-tech laboratory is, in fact, nothing other than a restroom, designed by architects Marit Justine Haugen and Dan Zohar from Oslo. It just goes to show that you can find beauty anywhere.

It’s not just cathedrals, operas and parliaments that can look astounding; public restrooms can look magnificent as well. After all, who wants to go to a loo that looks dark and depressing? Everyone would rather go somewhere where the view was worth the visit. Somewhere they can relax. Somewhere they can ponder the mysteries of the universe and marvel at how incredibly deep and complex life is.

Hence why the public loo is located at the Uredd rest area (Or Ureddplassen), which is surrounded by the sea and fjords. What’s more, you can even watch the northern lights from there in the winter, and see the midnight sun in the summer.

The toilet can be found on road Fv17, not far from the town of Gildeskål. The 433 km long Helgelandskysten scenic route, which the restroom is officially a part of, recently underwent a massive renovation to the tune of over 1.5 million euro. Part of that renovation included creating the toilet that looks like a work of art.

“The view from the steps is unique and there is ample seating well protected from traffic noise,” explained Steinar Skaar, who is the Helgelandskysten route manager.

However, the beautiful lavatory isn’t the only thing worth attention at Ureddplassen. The rest area is also home to a memorial for the 42 mariners who died in February 1943 when the Royal Norwegian Navy submarine HNoMS Uredd (‘Fearless’) hit a German mine and sank. Hot spots not only punch holes in the crust, but the also raise it up and heat it. As the plate moves away, it cools and subsides. The mountains also subside, and also erode. If the mountains are formed in a tropical climate a reef will form around it’s edges. If the coral growth can keep up with the relative sea level rise from the subsidence, then the reef will survive while the mountain sinks and eventually disappears below water level. If that happens you will get a circular ring of reef with an open lagoon in the center like the atoll above. At one point there was a volcano in the center of that lagoon. It’s a cool example of biology and geology interacting and biology winning, so to speak.”

This is an old turntable used for cars back in the day. Some also may call this a Lazy Susan! It was used for cars back in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s for easy access and movement. Cars back had a bigger turning radius so they had the turntable to help out.

The build date and fabrication number was stamped into the center of the steel. You can see that the turntable was built on Dec 11th, 1917. This thing was discovered while doing an earthquake inspection for a large industrial building in DTLA.

Image 1: This was a column on a soft-story retrofit project we have in Los Angeles. As you can see, the column has rusted to a point that it has become very brittle and weak. At the time this was discovered, emergency shoring was put into place for additional support.

That very same night, the Ridgecrest Earthquake happened. A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Ridgecrest, California, some 100 miles away from Los Angeles.

Image2: Once we came back to the property the very next day, we noticed the entire column had snapped in half due to the movement from the quake! If we hadn’t installed that additional shoring, the unit above may have met the ground…

This was a retaining wall being held up by a chain…

We’ve seen a few dolls under homes before, but this one may take the cake on the creepiest one so far.

This had to be the first image because it is by far my favorite this week. The absolute definition of a “DIY” project. This entire crawlspace was filled with tree branch posts, many of which were resting upon rocks and logs. I like to think it’s just a person’s bad hiding spot in a game of prop hunt. This one will fall some day. I will keep you posted.

When you gotta go… you gotta go

Somebody has some serious Jenga skills!

This is the result of the Kool-Aid man failing to break through…

But on a more serious note, this is a brick wall that had no reinforcement on either side. Over time, the weight from above caused the bowing of this wall. The earth below was actually quite sturdy but the rest of the home wasn’t.

There was also some dirt on the other side, which caused the wall to bow inward as opposed to outward. We like to call it an inverse surcharge.

Sometimes the access points to these crawlspaces can be a bit rough…

We found some vintage… booklets in the crawlspace of this home. No, we did not take them and sell them to collectors.

This was an old 1900’s apartment building that was being held up by some less then effective stud supports. You can see the newer members to the right and left of the original support. They had to trim down the newer ones to compensate for the sagging that was caused by the originals. Scary stuff.

This was the skull of some very large animal we found under a crawlspace. It isn’t just a normal rat or opossum skull as it was the size of a basketball. My guess would be some sort of alien (such as E.T.) or a Silver Back Gorilla, but I’m not too sure.

Yes, that is a stone acting as a concrete pier for the post. *Insert joke about the post being stoned here*

MDF, or Medium Density Fiber Board, is used in a lot of furniture and aesthetic pieces. This type of material should NOT be used for anything structural. A lot of the time it isn’t treated well for moisture or natural elements. This is what happens when it becomes exposed to water over a short period of time… it will begin to fray out and decay. It looks like mold, but it’s actually the wood fibers being pulled apart due to moisture. Don’t use MDF for your structural work!

This was a massive sinkhole that opened up in the back of somebody’s property. The pictures don’t show it well, but the hole is 12′ deep and about 6′ wide. At the bottom you can clearly see an old clay pipe from the city. It hasn’t been used in many, many years. It was thought to be an issue involving a septic cap. It’s possible the cap caved in to the tank and caused this massive hole to open. This thing was scary to stand next to in person.

An older pier that wasn’t even in contact with the post above. This would normally cause some dipping in the floors over time.

This was a hillside deck that had rotted and been damaged by termites over many years. The result is a decayed, unstable and leaning deck that is ready to slip.

Here we have a classic garden wall with improper footings and tie-ins to the other wall. It could also be the result of a “surcharge.” A surcharge is the result of pressure being built up against a surface, usually caused by the settlement of nearby structures, such as a house. I put that in layman’s terms so don’t yell at me for not being technical.

This is a post that had been spliced together with another random piece of wood. Why somebody would do this is beyond me.

Lean with it, rock with it!

We also specialize in soft-story retrofits. These are under a mandatory ordinance by the city of LA and many other surrounding cities. We were called out to inspect and correct a recently completed project done by another company.

This was the actual finished product by this other group… Now, we have been doing these retrofits since before the city ordinance, but many companies jumped on the bandwagon to make a quick buck. This is the result of a “quick buck” job. The cheapest isn’t always the best option folks.

And here we have the entrance to the next level of Super Mario Bros. It doesn’t actually go through the foundation wall, though by the looks of it, that wall could be easily broken apart. The whole foundation needs to be replaced. Very brittle.

Those nails are doing a great job holding nothing together.

If you go around East Los Angeles, you’ll see this sort of crack in retaining walls on almost every single block. These homes in Silver Lake, East LA, Mount Washington, etc. are all on a moving land mass and when mixed with water and quakes, it makes for a good damage sandwich.

As I was thinking of what to say for this caption I forgot there was a plastic skeleton and giant skull to the left and felt any other comment besides mentioning those would be a disservice to you guys. But the post is a bit wonky too.

This is pretty common in older homes around Los Angeles. Years of water damage and those pesky termites will eventual cause some pretty bad rotting and instability.

To the untrained eye, this may seem like nothing, but try and take a closer look. The entire house is leaning at a 45 degree angle. Scary stuff being under a home like this. A glass drops above and boom, that puppy drops. (not really but it is scary)

A nice little girder with no bracing. It’s also just smashing down the existing “post” and pier.
You’ll see this sort of thing all over LA. Instead of putting in a proper post, people will install random pieces of wood under a girder to help support the home. The problem with this is that it’s almost never braced and the wood used is often untreated. They rot much faster than most pieces. I’ll also add that this doesn’t necessarily compromise the structure.
